E3 Diagnostic Assessments: What To Expect

Every day we receive calls from concerned and frustrated homeowners trying to figure out just what is going on with their homes. Whether its high humidity, expensive energy bills, or strange odors that they can’t identify, these homeowners come to E3 to solve their dilemmas. To do this, we start by conducting a diagnostic assessment. Most ask “What is a diagnostic assessment?”.

E3’s team of expert building scientist start by making a “house call”. We start by taking note of the home comfort concerns you are experiencing while conducting a thorough walkthrough of your home. We also will conduct a variety of diagnostic tests that will help quantify how your home is performing and identify potential causes of your home’s issues. Depending on the size of your home an assessment can take anywhere between two and five hours.

E3’s home diagnostic assessment can include:

  • Blower Door Testing – This involves placing a canvas shroud that is fitted to a frame into your door frame with a large fan and controller while pulling air out of your home, which in turn brings air in through leakage points. This helps identify the home’s air leaks that contribute to drafts, discomfort, and energy loss
  • Duct Leakage Test – This involves taping off all the supply registers and connecting a small fan to the return of your HVAC system while pushing air throughout the duct system. This helps identify the amount of heated and cooled air that leaks outside, which causes several significant home issues
  • Thermal Imaging – While the blower door test is being conducted, we conduct a walkthrough of the home with a thermal imaging camera, which can help us pinpoint potential leakage areas as well as insulation gaps and hidden heat transfer issues
  • Ventilation Assessment – Testing the flow rates of your kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans helps ensure that your fans are performing as they should
  • Indoor Air Quality Review – Our IAQ monitor will evaluate your moisture levels, indoor CO2 levels, VOC counts, and other pollutants that may be present in your home
  • 10-Day Radon Testing – A precise, real-time assessment of your home’s radon levels, ensuring accurate data for safer, healthier indoor air.

After the assessment, homeowners receive a customized report that summarizes our findings as well as a custom set of recommendations that fit your home’s specific needs. If you choose, our own dedicated E3 EcoWORKS Team can carry out the recommended improvements. Your E3 INNOVATE Consultant then serves as your liaison and will conduct final diagnostic testing, providing data that tells the story of home improvements.
